Agreed, 4.5 is better for e-mail, but I would have to disagree when it
comes to Java. My large Java applets that work great under the Linux,
FreeBSD, and BSDI ports of Netscape from 3.0 to 4.05 crash the entire
browser when I run those same applets with the Linux port of 4.5b1.
(BTW, all of those applets runs under all Win95 ports of Netscape 3.0+
and IE 3.0+.) Hopefully since 4.5 is a beta, Netscape will fix its Java
so that I can actually run the applets in NetBSD that I create in NetBSD.

BTW, in terms of Java speed, I don't really notice any different between
Netscape 4.05 and 4.5b1, in the brief bit of time before 4.5b1 crashes.
Of course, even Sun's own appletviewer in the JDK 1.15 also runs those
applets quite slowly compared to any popular of the Java virtual machines
on Win95. The real problem here is that there aren't any Java JIT's that
we can run under NetBSD that support AWT properly. (Netscape for Win95
uses the Semmantic JIT.) And yes I know Kaffe, who's AWT is still unstable
and lacking, when it comes to applets. :-( Has anyone been able to port
the Linux TYA JIT to work with NetBSD's JDK 1.15? It has potential since
it uses the JDK's own AWT.

Over the next couple of days, I plan to download the FreeBSD port of
Netscape 4.5 and see how stable it is with Java. (Although in the long
run, I prefer the Linux port, since it has a lot more plugins, plus the
professional edition with calender, and a 128 bit SSL export version
when it is offically released.)

While on the subject of Java, it pains me to no end that none of the
Netscape Communicator's I've seen, that run on NetBSD, have any type of
Java audio support. Someone released a Linux patch for this called
libmoss, but it only works on an old version of Communicator.

Okay, enough ranting and raving. Let's hope that sometime in the near
future, we can get a Netscape that can run under NetBSD, that is somewhat
as good as the Win95 version.

Alicia.

PS. I run i386 NetBSD on Pentium (I/MMX/II) with a minumum of 56 MB of
	Ram and 3.5 GB disk.
