It could easily have been processing news - or rather mail - we don't
get a news feed anymore - no time to read it, but all the mailing
lists get injected into local news groups.  

The 2nd panic appeared to happen when the machine was quite idle.
Of course its hard to tell now with so much of the disk hosed.
