I don't know how hard it would be, but as the issue comes up from time 
to time it would probably be a reasonable project for someone to work
on.

I'd consult Charles Hannum on any details of how the MI parts should
work -- he's the guru for that stuff for the serial drivers, and
probably would have ideas.
