The mic _might_ be working.  If I tell xwave to record and make some
loud noises, I end up with a few tiny blips on the otherwise flat
signal.

When I play that I get nothing.  Similarly if I load .au files from
say the JDK demos xwave clearly understands them, but again play
produces no sound at all.
