That's not it. This is a bogus error message which is fixed
in the meantime as far as I know.
Your adapter should show up as
vendor 0x8086 device 0x1229 at pci? device? not configured
or so.

It is indeed not supported in 1.2.
In -current/1.3, there is support for the "82557" chip which is
probably on your board. (driver "fxp")
There is also a newer "82558" which might be compatible
to the "82557", but I don't know (and Intel doesn't tell you...).

(You could try a boot floppy to check.)
