Earlier I wrote that ifconfig'ing ep1 on my Toshiba notebook got:

I'm _very_ please to report that with the boot disk I build this 
morning from the current tar_files (well they were yesterday :-)

The probe line changes from:

>ep1 at pcmcia0 function 0 port 0x400-0x40f: 3Com 3C589 Ethernet

to:

ep1 at pcmcia0 function 0 port 0x330-0x33f: 3Com 3C589 Ethernet

and ifconfig now works ok!
