I had a similar problem recently with an ed. Everything seemed fine,
but then at some point I started getting "ed0: device timeout" and no
packets got sent (though it could receive, oddly enough).

It turned out that I had both ed0 and com1 on the same IRQ. The
problem started when I started using com1 - as long as one was not
being used, the other worked fine, but as soon as I tried to use both
at once, trouble started. (I knew I had them on the same IRQ, but
didn't know enough about the ISA bus to know this would cause trouble;
I thought it would merely mean that I'd lose some efficiency.)

So, check your IRQ assignments - make sure the IRQ used by ed2 isn't
also being used by anything else.
