You should make sure that the kernel on that disk was built with
'options I386_CPU', or you might not get far....

AFAIK, this means that the BIOS got an error reading cylinder 0, head
0, sector 0 of your disk.  However, something funny is going on
because the /-\| pattern is only generated while loading the kernel,
which isn't stored in the first sector on the disk.  These messages
are probably spurious, and may result from the age of your old PC's
BIOS.
