I also once spent a few hours trying to install 3c509, twiddling the
link0 and link1 bits in vain until I stumbled upon the following
paragraph in the ep0 man page:

     Some models of 3c5x9 have all three connectors on them.  In the case of
     these cards; you must configure the transceiver type with the 3Com sup-
     plied DOS configuration disk before the link0/link1 flags will operate
     correctly.

As it turned out, the man page was speaking the ugly truth.
