Well, there is an automated upgrade script that comes with most
releases, but in fact you don't need it -- you can largely upgrade
your machine simply by untarring the sets (other than etc) onto your
machine. I usually manage an upgrade in a matter of a few minutes.

The only thing that gets tricky is upgrading your /etc, which has to
be done by hand so that you don't blow away local configuration
changes. This usually takes me half an hour or so if I've done a bad
job of keeping up -- sometimes it takes almost no time at all.

There are some other niceties scripts handle -- things like updating
your filesystems to the latest version of FFS if you are running a pre
1.0 NetBSD and things like that -- but for the most part, upgrading is
pretty simple.
