I hope you didn't edit directly? "vipw" is the correct tool for such
things.

Boot to single user mode by enterning "-s" at the boot loader prompt.
If you didn't set the console to secure you'll be able to login. Type
"fsck -p" and "mount -av" afterwards and you should be able to maintain
your system.
