The crackling is probably caused by the buffer size.  Do you use a SB16?
Look at my work on http://etla.ml.org/~willey/projects/sb16.  It's horribly
out of date and I have been meaning to spend more time on it after Decemner
but I am scrambling to get grad school funding right now and it takes all
of my time...  There might be some info that you can glean.
