I had the same error messages when I tried to install
NetBSD-1.1 on a IDE drive.
This was caused by the BIOS not passing drive information
to bootstrap in %dl.
Workaround: make special bootblocks for hard disk
(remove floppy code, hardwire drive 0x80).

Was a Phoenix BIOS.
