I think a notable factor is that both the DX4s and the 5x86 have
write-back cache on them, where DXs and DX2s don't.  Since both of the
SCSI cards you mentioned are bus-master cards, this is a very likely
cause of the problems.  Especially if your motherboard doesn't provide
the cache-invalidation logic necessary to make bus-mastering devices
and the CPU cache happy with each other.

Does you BIOS *specifically* recognize these CPUs as what they are?
If so, you might be able to go into the BIOS and try turning off the
write-back feature.  If not, you might try going into the BIOS and
turn off the CPU cache completely, and see if it works any better (not
very efficient, but maybe workable).  You might also access the ASUS
web site and see if there is an updated BIOS there that will handle
this stuff better.
