Does your kernel config contain:

options		FIFO

If not, try adding it and see if the problem goes away.  However,
using FIFOs under a kernel that doesn't support them shouldn't crash
the machine.

What do you get from the DDB backtrace ("bt" command, I think) when
the crash occurs?
