Subject: audio device advice?

I'm using a soundbalster pro card in my 86 box. The dmesg says:

sb0 at isa0 port 0x220-0x237 irq 7 drq 1: dsp v4.11

And I've executed a MAKEDEV audio to build the devices. However, catting
an 'au' file to /dev/audio yields a noisy, low s/n version of the sound
file.

Is this a driver problem? Is my hardware incompatible? It works fine
under DOS/windoze.

Any ideas appreciated!
