Sorry, forgot to mention that part.  The kernel is -current, supped a
couple of days ago [around 5/21].  The disk that is on the 2940 is a
Seagate Medalist ST51080N, which seems to be a fairly fast drive [at
least when it does not lock the system up].  When the lockup happens
the drive seems stuck with its access light lit up.

[This is an improvement over previous behavior, where the kernel would
not make it throught the probe before locking up]
