my own experience with the DLC chip in an old motherboard was that I'd
get random core dumps every once in a while, probally due to corrupted
cache. I didn't do anything special to compile the kernels.

apparently the beefier non-DLC 386->486 chips are decent, but they just
cost too much. $100 for a chip isn't very good. for $25 I'd do it.
