My apologies if I'm raising a topic that has been beaten to death.
Upon returning from a long trip out of town, I found the February 1996
edition of ACM Transactions on Computer Systems. In it, on page 3, is
"The Measured Performance of Personal Computer Operating Systems",
by Chen et al, which benchmarks and compares Windows, Win NT 3.5,
and NetBSD 1.0.
It's a rather favorable comparison; unsurprising to anyone who uses
all three on roughly comparable hardware.
