I hate asking questions like this since it might be in my backlog of
port-i386 and current-users mail, but I upgraded the kernel from about
4 Jan 1996 or so.  Xaccel stopped working, now it hangs the system.
I'm a bit unclear on how to debug this since it involves changing
video modes.  Suggestions?
Has there been a serious change in access to video memory since then?

Of course, my XFree86-3.1.2 still works, which is strange.
