I believe -- but I haven't tested this theory for lack of available 
machines at the moment -- that *this* is the critical step.  I seem to 
recall trashing a DOS partition a couple months back when I tried to 
install NetBSD without marking the NetBSD partition active before booting 
from the install floppies.

Admittedly, if this is in fact the problem, something needs to be tweaked.
