I think my problems with my Gravis UltraSound are hardware problems--if
I set up the hardware to use 8-bit DMA channels it works fine; if I use
16-bit channels it doesn't work right and if I try to ^C a recording it
will hang my machine.

Probably a flaky DMA controller on my machine's motherboard, sigh.  I'll
know for sure when I try some DOS hacking to verify the brokenness.
