I've just bought an HP 1.2GB SCSI drive, but my NCR 53c810 controller
doesn't seem to like it much. It properly identifies it on boot:

ncr0: restart (scsi reset).
scsibus4 at ncr0
...
ncr0 targ 4 lun 0: <HP C3724S 5153> SCSI2 direct fixed
sd2 at scsibus4sd2(ncr0:4:0): FAST SCSI-2 100ns (10 Mb/sec) offset 8.
: 1149MB, 3703 cyl, 5 head, 127 sec, 512 bytes/sec

But when I try to access it even to disklabel it, I get:

sd2(ncr0:4:0): command aborted
sd2: dos partition I/O error
sd2(ncr0:4:0): command aborted
sd2(ncr0:4:0): command aborted
sd2(ncr0:4:0): command aborted

I've checked the termination, and another drive worked fine at this
position on the cable.

I'm runing NetBSD 1.0 with version 1.49 of Stephen Esser's ncr.c
(1995.09.21). I notice that there seems to be a more recent version,
albeit with a different number (1.23, 1995.12.28) in the NetBSD-current
tree. Has much hacking been done on this? I'll try to import it and
see what I can do with it.

What's a good way to debug this sort of problem?
