Compiling the kernel with -O doesn't trigger the problem.  -O6 does.
This on i386, running a heavy feed (news) to cause the problem.

(I suggest compiling all with -O6 and then redoing the ppp and com files
with -O one by one to determine where the bad optimization occurs)
