I dunno what the problem might be ... unless, perhaps you're using unionfs, or,
like I said, maybe the file that the vnd is made of is on an NFS server.
Other than those two suggestions, I'm afraid I have no answer at the moment :-(

Though, I've been using the vnd _a lot_ lately, and haven't seen any lossage
of this nature.
