I'm not sure what exactly is hanging the line when logging in, but it
looked exactly like this to me, as well (being the poor modem user and not
the person at the console, I didn't have as much data available to me).
I've likewise tried all sorts of combinations of flags in /etc/ttys to no
avail. 

I found it necessary to apply my patch for the SMC UARTs in the various
systems around here, but even with that it still hangs pretty horribly. 
Going back to (my slightly patched) 1.56 solves most of the worst problems, 
but still doesn't give me RTS flow control. :-(
