I also have an SMC 8216 (SMC Elite 16 Ultra) and it works just fine in
my Gateway 2k 486 dx2/66 vlb w/16m ram.  I ran HTTP on it all year,
and achieved ~360kb/sec incoming transfer rates via ftp.

Maybe your wiring is faulty.  Have you checked "netstat -i" for the
transfer error statistics?
