Hi. I'm new to the list, so please forgive me if this has been mentioned
before. The pc speaker driver appears to have gone away. What happened? 

Also, I'll note that I have a soundblaster (original old one) and /dev/audio
will work properly exactly once from bootup time. After that reads from it
produce no data and writes to it just make a click in the audio output and
accept data much faster than the 8k/sec they (i assume) should be. 
Any clues?
