I am planning on purchasing a 730 megabyte Western Digital IDE drive.

It should work fine, with one caveat:

If the drive doesn't do bad sector forwarding, and you thus enable
bad144, and any of the blocks needed to load the kernel have been
relocated, then the boot program will lose horribly. This is because
the boot program uses the BIOS to read the disk, and suffers the 1024
cylinder limitation.

In practice, this should not be a problem for newer drives, since they
should be doing their own bad sector forwarding.
