I wrote small utility (see new http://www.chmurka.net/p/hpcbeep.tar.gz) 
to snoop on a tty, but it is still far from perfect. From new README:

If you want to use this program as a standard shell beep sound, try this
command: hbsnoop /bin/sh. It is still far from perfect and I've had minor
problems when using interactive ncurses programs (and color prompts) with
it. Still, if you want to contribute, please mail me.
