I had some similar errors with 2.1 on my MobilePro 780, and the only way 
I could get a working system was to cross-compile the sets on my 
workstation and do disklabel and newfs with the 1.6.2 install kernel and 
manually untar the sets onto the CF card.

Guess you could do it as a last resort.  Here are the steps I followed
