  Further tries indicate that a "relatively clean" exit from X(hpc) to text mode (console mode) could be by way of keys combination
  <ctrl> <alt> <backspace> on any twm window [follow by command clear, if necessary] on my Sharp HC 7000 using the same configuration of my earlier posting.

See netbsd.bugs ... port-hpcmips/32403:Xhpc does not exit cleanly on NetBSD 
3.0.

I reverted X to NetBSD 2.1 and that appears to work just fine with the rest of 
the NetBSD 3.0 release.
