hmm ... that's strange ... I play mp3 on my MP790, which is basically using 
the same chip NEC Vr4121@168 ... and XAudio plays fine. Granted that is 
running in WinCE3.0 and not NetBSD ... but I thought it should run better?

The default Windows Media Player on my MP790 can get jumpy when I switch 
apps while XAudio plays just fine. I believe its to do with buffering 
implementation. Maybe this might point you somewhere?
