ISTR a post awhile ago that there was a kernel config file option to 
enable using the vga port.  I haven't checked, but maybe you can disable 
the lcd screen in the config file.  Maybe you can have both the internal 
and external displays off, and just use the serial port to an external 
terminal, if that's what you want.
