: I'm considering purchasing a Mobilepro 780 on eBay and having NetBSD on it;
: but have some questions:
: 1. Is the modem functional in NetBSD?

No.

: 2. How much memory does the basic installation of the hpcmips port need? In
: other words, can I expect to have enough room for a reasonable number of
: applications?

I typically use on the order of 20M for the kernel + X + emacs + a few
other things.

: 3. Does hpcmips support virtual terminals, or will I need to install X Window
: to run multiple applications that require user interaction.

I believe it does, but I run in X. The resolution is 640x240, so you
are doing good to get 30 lines on the screen at once.

: 4. How do others use NetBSD on Mobilepro 7*?

I use it to write the articles, and sometimes to compose email. I
tried to use it as for presentation at BSDcon, but discovered that 240
is too few vertical pixels. When I get some time, I'm planning on
seeing if I can get 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 working at full
resolution in X (I know I can get these modes on the chip, but don't
know if I can make X cope or if the board has enough RAM to do them).

: 5. Are there any consultants that I could hire to install NetBSD for me?

I can do that. :-)

: I'm envisioning running the following:
: mutt & msmtp (Is msmtp available for NetBSD?)
: w3m
: lynx + ssl
: mc
: xfce
: vnc
: fetchmail

These I've not run on my box.

: ssh
: vi
: X Window

These work very well for me.

: Linksys wireless pcmcia card

If it is prism based chipset, it will work. If it is the broadcom
based one, or a cardbus card it won't.

: A pcmcia modem, if needed

These work, but I've never used one (no need)

: a memory card (Does anyone know the max capacity for Mobilepro 780?)

I believe that 32MB is the max memory for these devices, and in the US
they were shipped with this much memory. I've used the japanese
version with 16MB and tha's a little small.

: Does this seem reasonable?

Likely.

: (I was on this list a while back with a Mobilepro 880 that I considered
: converting; but I gave it to my stepson went to college.)

The 880 has a bigger screen than the 780.
