Hi Bryan, 

IIRC there was another post where someone said his "unscientific" 
tests had shown that running sync prior to suspending prevented 
the vertical bars problem.  I haven't been motivated to try 
running sync because I only see the problem occasionally.  If 
you try it, and it works, please let me know.
