you can display other X apps remotely?
otherwise I'd say you were missing the X libraries, needed to do remote
display.

here at work we always run Ethereal remotely-displayed down an SSH tunnel;
because the monitoring box is on the outside of the firewall, and we want to
display it on our desktops behind the firewall.
