I see these vertical bars once in awhile running z50 with iirc 1.5 and
Greg's kernel without X.  So maybe it's not related to X and not related to
the window manager.  Only happens after a suspend, restart cycle, and 
really locks the machine.  Perhaps once in 100 times or so.
