I pretty much only used vi, bash, and gcc on my 48MB z50. worked just fine
for that without swap. 

if you're just running xterms on your display, any reason not to use the
console and multiple 'screen' sessions? (don't take that as questioning your
judgement or anything; I'm honestly curious about your reasons.)

don't take that out of context; I did preface that comment with words to the
effect of "if you're doing something that requires enough memory to need
swap on your CF disk, you're getting out of the league of things that these
devices are readily adaptable to, and you should look at getting a small
laptop with more memory and a spinning disk". :)

(which I belive pretty much agrees with your statement of 'no swap on CF').
