this may not be what you want, but i use xconsole for that purpose, 
"sticking" it on the top of my tvtwm screen. it works fine with my z50 
running netbsd 1.6. it informs you the battery status when it changes. i 
know nothing about the specific issues related to mobilepro 770, though...
