I tried out the new 2000315 hpcmips snapshot and discovered that
this fixed the 3C589C problem and I was able to bring up the network
- not sure what the original problem was but as it has gone away
probably doesnt matter

Apologies for wasting peoples time - I should have checked this
first

As an aside - I didnt see any announcement for the 20000315 snapshot
on this list or the web page - I could have missed this but would
probaly be useful to update the web page
