Hello Andy:

it is not actually panicing; it "just" hangs, the kernel is still alive.
But you're probably right even a programm behind a serial console will
need to access a file at some point and then hang because everything is
on NSF and therefore out of reach.

Maybe I will first install to disk: cp -PR everything adjust fstab
and see what happens. 

Or did you have something different in mind?
