Well its been a long time since I looked at any of this but there is something 
at  ftp://ftp.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/pub/packages/X/Xhp300/hpbsd.tar.gz
Don't remember what version that corresponded to and I've currently misplaced 
my old R5 development tree (it'll be on a CD somewhere).

From memory the display and input sides are fairly well separated.
