A 98789a runs 1280x1024 @60hz.... Do you think I could make it work with a
Linux system and just use a vt220 as console for my 425?

Alas, no.  The A1659 (CRX) card is an SGC card that runs at 1280x1024 @
72 Hz, and those monitors (and the 98550) run at 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz.
You'd need a monitor like a A2094A or a A1097C for that card.

Sounds like your 425t's have the SGC adapter instead of the standard
DIO-II adapter (for graphics card).  NetBSD/hp300 doesn't currently
support SGC cards (no one's written the drivers).

Sounds like you're out of luck.
