The 4-port mux part number is indeed 98642A and the 8-port mux is 98638A.
I had a 98638A that worked fine in my machine under 1.3 (I haven't tried
it recently).

Maybe it doesn't like that there are two of them.  Try pulling one out.

Are you sure your break-out box is working correctly and that your link
cable is correctly wired?
