Here's what I used way back when on an S3-928 card... It was mostly
readable:

    ModeLine "blah" 126.12 1536 1608 1968 2000 1102 1107 1114 1122 -vsync -hsync

It's pretty trivial to calculate though so doing 1280x1024 shouldn't be
too much of a problem.
