I saw some of the same problems under the Sparc port on a disk that
worked flawlessly under SunOS with the same SCSI configuration.
Basically SunOS (and probably HP/UX too) is very forgiving with SCSI
errors, usually at the penalty of much slower speed. My disk turned out
to be perfectly good, but my termination was flaky. I was using a
terminator resistors on an old Archive QIC drive. When I moved to a
standalone external terminator, everything worked perfectly under
NetBSD1.2.

I believe ZBR is just a method of encoding information on the disk, like
RLL and MFM.
