A number of things have changed.  A prime example is NFS; we now have
NFSv3 support and the kernel structures have changed, making it impossible
to use 1.1 binaries with a 1.2 kernel.

All in all, I'd say it's very strongly recommended that you run 1.2
binaries with a 1.2 kernel.
