i've recently had occasion to attempt to run X on a display that wasn't
the console, so it wasn't running ITE.

the X server doesn't mind, and attempts to start. it succeeds, but the
display is very garbled-- random pixels scattered about, and the no working
fonts.

there are no errors of any kind.

any ideas?
