it could also be getty.

for instance, if i have it exec /usr/games/fortune instead of /usr/bin/login,
it trashes the serial port in exactly the same way-- as soon as a login name
is given (i.e., when getty execs the login proc), things blow up.

the serial port comes back when getty resets.

it doesn't appear to be anything as simple as parity or the like. someone
who has a system in a better state for debugging should try hooking a
terminal to their dca port and spawning getty off to it.

and, charles, cut the attitude. your code has been screwed up too many times
in the past for me to trust much you've touched. (the previous wasn't meant
to offend, it was just a statement of fact, but you can get offended if you
like, i don't care.)
